It also promotes sustainability and is healthier for human health. However, adolescents lack the knowledge and skills to prepare and consume plant-based meals. In this context, the study used a Reasoned Action Approach (RAA) to analyze the determinants of adolescents’ intention to consume more plant-based foods.
The RAA framework focuses on the behavioral and normative factors that influence adolescents’ intention to adopt a plant-based eating pattern. Factors related to the intention to comply with social norms and diet choices are proximal factors. While behavioral factors are directly related to the intention to consume more plant-based foods, normative factors relate to the intention to comply with social norms.
Adolescents’ perceived barriers to consuming a plant-based diet included nutritional concerns, difficulty cooking and preparing meals, and time constraints. They also cited their parents’ influence on their food choices. Parents can play a role in influencing adolescents’ dietary habits by educating them about the benefits of a more plant-based diet.
Participants also indicated that they would be willing to consume more fruits, vegetables, and meat alternatives. Many respondents cite that they are not aware of the environmental impact of the foods they eat. Nearly two-thirds of participants did not talk about the effect of their food on climate change.
