How Can Panamanians Incorporate Diverse Sources of Carbon Isotopes into Their Plant-Based Diets?

If we want to understand what the ancient Maya did for food, we can use stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. This isotopic analysis has been used in numerous archaeological studies. It has provided fascinating insights into ancient Maya movements and ecology.
These studies were funded by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The isotope analysis was carried out in the field and in the laboratory. For the present study, isotopes were analyzed on animal remains as well as on mangrove vascular plants, potential food sources and Phy. Phy was determined by determining its d13C value at the mouth of the river.
During the Preclassic, maize was the main staple of the diet. However, there was some variation. In fact, the diets of dogs and deer were quite different.
While some studies have investigated the diets of animals, few have studied the diets of their teeth. These studies show that the d18O and d15N values of dog and deer teeth are dependent on their leafy vegetation. Similarly, the d13C values of hypselodont incisors grow throughout their lives. Therefore, d13C isotopes provide valuable information on animal movement.
Isotopes of both d13C and d15N have been found to be particularly sensitive to the contributions of C4 plants to SPM. OC isotopes are also a useful indicator of the trophic interactions between the marine and terrestrial environments. As a result, this study examined the changes in the diets of macro-invertebrates in mangrove forests that had been restored.
Mangrove forests provide habitat for a diverse array of terrestrial fauna. They are recognized as highly productive ecosystems. But, these systems are increasingly being altered by inputs from deforested watersheds. In particular, they are increasingly subject to hydrodynamic changes in adjoining seas. Consequently, they are undergoing changes in hydrodynamic forcing that affect the intertidal zone and the upper reaches of estuaries.
These changes affect both the food sources and the trophic interactions of the mangrove ecosystem. This research provides valuable information for the conservation of mangrove forests worldwide. Moreover, the isotope analysis of both nitrogen and carbon can help to monitor the diet composition of primary consumers and to determine the trophic interactions among species.
